Description:

Hatteras Community Sailing (HCS) exists to inspire Cape Hatteras residents and visitors to independence, lifelong seamanship, and a respect for nature. This camp is an introduction to the sport of college sailing. The boat we sail is the International standard for Collegiate Sailing, the C420. High School Sailing is a smaller pool of athletes compared to bigger team sports, and it can be easier for High School Sailors to get on a College team.  Some sailing Scholarships are available. Dinghy sailors are respected and get preference among maritime professionals opening doors to lifelong careers in sailing. The C420 sailboat is a feeder to Olympic Sailing. It is a swift, exciting and nimble boat to sail. Don’t be intimidated. We sail a 2 person boat. Experienced skippers will sail together with beginners during camp. Coaches will provide a chase boat and rotate beginners sailing with experienced crew. Each day we will introduce a new aspect of the sport, do land exercises, observe sailing demonstrations, and then try out sailing with an experienced skipper. Meet other Hatteras kids who sail for an introduction to the sport at this fun week of camp. Learn basic sailing skills and knowledge including:

  • Wind awareness
  • Boat Parts
  • Basic Knots
  • Capsize Recovery
  • Points of Sail
  • Boat handling in light conditions: Tack, Jibe, Upwind, Downwind, Reach

**NOTE: In case of winds over sustained 15 knots camp may meet in an alternate location; Camp is not canceled for rain, only chance of lightning or excessively high winds will prompt a cancellation for the day. Parents will be texted evening before camp and sometimes we will do alternative activities while a thunderstorm may pass by.
