Description:

Hatteras Community Sailing (HCS) exists to inspire Cape Hatteras residents and visitors to independence, lifelong seamanship, and a respect for nature. Attending this camp is a great introduction to our local junior sailing program. Meet other kids who sail and gain an introduction to sailing through a fun week of camp. Have fun with your friends swimming, exploring the Pamlico Sound, and playing in the water while you learn basic sailing knowledge, skills, and boat handling. Each day we will have an introductory chalk talk with the coach, do some land instruction, witness some demonstration sailing, and then have an opportunity to try out basic boat handling skills in a shallow water controlled environment often double-handed with an experienced sailor and possibly graduating to single handed sailing by the end of the week. Our lead coach rotates through the group working with one or two sailors at a time while assistant coaches supervise waterplay on kayaks, floats, paddle boards, etc. Coaches will provide each sailor with a sailing skills mastery chart, and each day we open camp by allowing sailors to ‘master the sea’ and demonstrate their knowledge for the group and get a mastery sticker on their skills chart.

Learn basic sailing skills and knowledge including:

  • Wind awareness
  • Boat Parts
  • Basic Knots
  • Capsize Recovery
  • Points of Sail
  • Boat handling in light conditions: Tack, Jibe, Upwind, Downwind, Reach

**NOTE: In case of winds over sustained 15 knots camp may meet in an alternate location; Parents will be texted evening before camp.

Who is this for? What will sailors learn?

Learn To Sail Optimist camp is for beginner and intermediate sailors.  A swim test is required to participate in all sailing camps. We run beginners and intermediate sailors together in the same camp by splitting the group. Each camp has a lead instructor and a junior assistant coach to work with sailors in different beginner skill levels.  Coaches are looking for mastery of each of the skills taught before moving to the next level. Beginner sailing in this age group is taught on the Optimist Sailboat. You are not required to own your own sailboat to participate. Course registration includes the boat charter fee.
