420 Sailing is Standard for High School and Collegiate Sailing as a Team Sport. The Collegiate 420 is basically a boat for 2 crew that sails only with the Mainsail and the Jib and there is no trapeze and harness training. Club 420, which we practice as much as possible in the Summer Sessions does have the added thrill and complexity of learning how to sail with a Spinnaker and with the Crew Member wearing a harness and often hiking out on the trapeze! There are over 300 domestic colleges, universities and academies that have sailing teams. One of the best in the Nation, NC State, practices just across the Sound in Oriental and Hampton/Norfolk area has numerous distinguished programs like, Old Dominion, Christopher Newport, and Hampton University.
Hatteras Community Sailing has several 420 Sailboats for Training and Practicing. When sailors all sail in a race on the same exact boat, this is called One Design Sailing. Its starts at its earliest level for kids as young as 6 years old on the International Optimist. Kids lucky enought to have access to several years of Opti Sailing are much better poised to be highly successful in High School and Collegiate 420 Sailing. Every session, every practice and every regatta is a learning experience and there are some things that can only be learned and improved upon by taking the leap and putting yourself on the race course! When sailors sail the same boats, it is only really the boathandling, tactical, strategic and teamwork skills that set them apart. The skills to be mastered in these highly competitive classes are more than just sailing skills but rather success life skills that can be instrumental long into ones future. Sailing programs and opportunities like this are few and far in between, especially for kids who do not live near the water, so this is a small and elite peer group of kids who persevere through tough mental and physical challenges to be successful. So if you like challenges, this is one that is tough and rewarding and will pay you back long into your forseeable future.
Our summer sessions are broken into 2 parts so that kids who are busy with alternate sports or family activities have a chance to be a part of a full training sesion. Training on longer term and more advanced sailing topics is referred to as a Development Program. It is the next step for young sailors who have gone through some introductory training at a short term camp or course and want to learn more and improve their skills. 420 Sailboats are a 2 person boat, so if a participant does not attend a practice, it leaves his team mate or the team in general at a loss of what to do without them. Also skills taught in our Development Programs are sequential and build upon the previous lesson, so it is hard to step in after missing a class or 2.
