Sep-19, 2023: Lighthouse Regatta Weather Update

Sep-19 08:30 am: A Weather Update from PRO, Jay Phillips

At the moment, there is no low pressure system off of Florida or North of the Bahamas. While there are some pretty ugly forecasts for the weekend, they are regarding storms that do not exist yet and are very speculative. There is a very good chance that the forecast will change drastically from weather apps to weather app depending on which models they emphasize.

Link To Current Satellite View

Please take a look at this link to the current satellite view. You can see there is no low pressure formed and there is some eastward shear of the clouds that just passed yesterday. We hope that the dry high pressure keeps shearing and pressing the potential front further out to sea and away from the east coast.

Weather forecasting in Cape Hatteras is rarely spot on. Please do not make plans based on the forecast until 24-36 hours in advance. Wind and weather conditions can vary greatly from Nags Head to Rodanthe and even between Avon and Buxton. On hot days, thunder storms often roll just north of Avon due to the geography of the inner banks and proximity to the warm Gulf Stream waters only 15 miles offshore.

The Race Committee, members, and volunteers here at Hatteras Community Sailing are planning a few fun rainy day activities in case there is inclement weather. In addition, we do have more protected race course locations in the event that the wind is strong and onshore.

Please keep checking with the Race Committee here on HatterasSailing.org or call us for local weather updates regarding for this week’s sailing festival and regatta.
