Learning Goals and Objectives
Sailors interested in boat building, composites, rigging, and boat design can apprentice with Phillips Boatworks to learn advanced composite boat building skills. In addition to learning boat building skills, the sailors will become more competent sailors by understanding the technology, physics, and material science that go into the sport. Performance sailors at the top level are very involved in boat building and sail design technology .
Example Project
Optimist Fiberglass Repairs
Many of the optimists Hatteras Sailing has purchased have badly damaged bows. We have already taken a splash mold of a bow that we can use to create a mold for replacing these bows with newly built bows. The boat building apprentice can learn to
- prep a mold surface
- wet lay fiberglass in a mold
- properly mixing epoxy resin
- safety procedures needed to work with boat building resins, fiberglass, and paints
- suppliers, costing, and sourcing if the raw materials
- releasing parts from mold
- prep for paint
- paint
- fare
- learn to splice and create all new rigging
- learn to trim out the sails which have been pieced together but must still be trimmed out
