Hatteras Community Sailing Program, in its 5th year now, is still a young but quickly growing program on Hatteras Island in the Village of Buxton, one of the most nautically enchanting areas on the Eastern Seaboard ! Long know as a Mecca for Kitesurfing, Windsurfing, Surfing, and Wing Foiling now, Hatteras almost always has excellent wind conditions, but with the significant advantage of beaches facing the Ocean to the Northeast and to the South, as you round the Cape. While our waters are shallow, there are some significant areas that are plenty deep for boats up to 6 feet deep.

Job Descriptions

Coaching staff at Hatteras Sailing are ideally US SAILING Level 1 Certified Instructors. If over 18 years old, it is vital to obtain the USCG OUPV or Masters License…. which is pretty easy nowadays with the in class testing and 5 day to 2 weekend schools like Sea School. If you sailed in High School and College, you probably already have ample time on the water to qualify with your Sea Time Form. Here are the key features we look at to pick our staff.

  • Pleasant Personality – Kids like coaches who like them. Parents are always challenging, so a pleasant personality with a bit of a thick skin for parents from different backgrounds and life philosophies for their children.
  • Competent Sailing Skills – While we are not all good at all boats, it helps to be good at, or able to rapidly adjust to a boat you are not familiar with. We offer programs on a wide variety of boats so that kids and adults can test the waters to see what kind of sailing is right for them. Cats, Sloops, Dinghies, Hobie Cats, etc.
  • Leadership – An Instructor needs to be a good role model and leader for their students. It is important to set a good example for safety procedures and sailing techniques that are provem
  • Patience – My biggest challenge is sometimes being patient and letting the student discover what needs to be done. Discovery method teaching is the most effective. When a student figures it out on their own (with a little subtle help) it is always best, Overbearing is not good.
  • Hard Work Ethic – Working on the water is rewarding, but it is also hard work. Lots of sun exposure, tons of boat handling, heavy responsibiilties to lead by example with boat care. Work starts early in the morning and sometimes runs to late in the evening.
  • Flexibility – We actually have 4 businesses at the Sailing Center that you can build time with. First is the Non Profit Educational Program. Second is the Catamaran Charter Boats. Third is the 46 ft Deadrise Motor Yacht. Fourth is the Property Owner of the Sailing Center. You may be called upon to teach, to captain a charter, to fix an outboard, to paint the drywall in the office, or to run the projector for Sailing Movie night ! Best chances for success are for those willing to do what is needed for the Organization to be successful.
  • Willing to Learn New Skills – Boat repair, boat building, sailmaking, canvas, rigging, gas engines, RIB hypelon repair, trailer repair, boat cleaning and detailing, office work, time keeping, retail sales, bartending, and most of all having a good sense of humor. It is important to be an optimist and open to learning new things.

While we would love for someone capable of everything listed above, it is understandable if you are not all these things. But the list is the fastest route to long term success being involved in and running a new and growing Sailing Center and Maritime Educational Training Center on the Outer Banks!
