Design, Build, and Race Your Own Boat

This is the registration to enter your home built boat design into the 2024 Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Boat Builder’s Race.  The Boatbuilders Challenge is to build your own boat according the competition rules and compete again other registrants to race your boat as well as other awards for creativity, innovation, presentation and execution!

The Event is part of the 2024 Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Sailing Festival and is intended to be a fun event for the entire community of the Outer Banks.  There is no age limit or team size limit. You do not need to be a regular Hatteras Sailor or know how to sail.

  • start early
  • test and iterate
  • get advice from a local boat builder, surf board shaper, etc
  • come prepared to race
  • don’t forget your paddle

Awards

Awards are given to

  • Race Winner
  • Best Engineer
  • Best Looking Boat

Race Winner is also awarded a $100 cash prize sponsored by Phillips Boatworks.

Boat Builder’s Challenge Rules

This is the registration to enter your home built boat design into the 2024 Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Regatta Boat Builder’s Race.  The Boatbuilders Challenge is to build your own boat according the competition rules and compete again other registrants to race your boat as well as other awards for creativity, innovation, presentation and execution! This challenge works like the America’s Cup – each regatta, the winner makes the rules for the next challenge. In Spring ’24 at the Wind ‘n Waves Regatta, Capt’ Cole won with a wooden sailboat design. These are his rules. They were discussed with the other competitors, PRO ,and Race Committee as they were refined in to the rules below. If you have an questions or concerns about what is legal, use this contact form.

The Event is part of the 2023 Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Sailing Festival and is intended to be a fun event for the entire community of the Outer Banks.  There is no age limit or team size limit. You do not need to be a regular Hatteras Sailor or even know how to sail. Competitors can team up, but each team member must be on board during the race.

The only rules are:

  • no fossil fuels or ready made motors; competitors may build a man powered or solar powered propulsion but must not purchase a motor
  • no surfboards or paddleboard designs…must be a boat
  • no pre-built boats
  • sails may be used if they are made by the competitor
  • no ready-made spars; same rules as the motor…if you build it you can use it
  • lines, blocks, rigging are allowed to be used ready made
  • kids and parents can work together on the boat

Awards

Three awards are given to the competitors of this challenge: Race Winner gets a $100 cash prize sponsored by Phillips Boatworks; Awards are also given to Best Engineer and Best Looking Boat.
