Goals and Objectives
The goal of Jr. Coaching is to learn. This is a volunteer apprenticeship designed to train you to succeed once you are old enough (16) to enroll in the US Sailing Level 1 Instructor course. To become a certified US Sailing Level 1 Coach, you need the following skills:
- Communication and interpersonal skills
- Power boating skills including how to tow junior boats with coaches boat, docking, safe powerboat operation
- Club 420 and Opti sailing skills
Your volunteer hours will be logged in the system. If you’ve completed the equivalent number of volunteer hours at minimum wage, the club will reimburse you for all expenses associated with getting your Level 1 instructor certification once you turn 16 years old.
Volunteer Position
This position is a volunteer position, but like any apprenticeship or internship the time is valuable and required to gain the skill that you need to succeed as a sailing coach. You may begin Jr. Coaching as soon as your coaches think you are mature enough and a good enough sailor to add value to their coaching sessions. This is an invitation only position.
Mentoring and Guidance
Once you become 15 years old, please make your coaches and the program director aware of your upcoming 16th birthdate. The program director will help you get signed up for the US Sailing Level 1 Instructor course. After you are certified, you can begin working as a paid sailing coach with Hatteras Sailing!
