Emerson Waldorf 10th Grade: Intro to Sailing Day 2

DATES: April 30 – May 2nd

TIME: 9am-3pm

DESCRIPTION: Intro to Sailing curriculum for high school age beginners.

STAFF & EQUIPMENT:

Hatteras Sailing will make available one 18’ RIB Safety boat, two certified head coaches, and two junior coaches. The following assets will be allocated for use in the instruction as to introduce a variety of sailing experiences through the week. We will try to get a little experience on each type of boat, weather permitting.

  • Melges 24 Keelboat
  • Stiletto 27 Catamaran
  • Sabre 42 Yacht

COURSE OVERVIEW:

Each day begins with a classroom chalk talk, a short land drill to reinforce what the students are supposed to do out on the water before we go out. Each day ends with a chalk talk wrap up. Classroom materials include take away worksheets for each day and student evaluations will be provided at the end of the course.

    • Review Day 1 and Day 2
    • Upwind vs. Downwind Sailing

During on the water time, instructors reinforce and remind students how what they are doing reflects the academic learning introduced in chalk talk and land drills. Wrap up is a socratic method review and truly meant to be a debrief for students to react to the day and instructors to lead them back to the learning goals of the day.
