2021 Sailing Registration

“Ships in a harbor are safe, but that’s not what ships are built for.” – John Shedd

Welcome to Hatteras Community Sailing. Hatteras Sailing is a US Sailing Community Sailing Program formed to nurture sailing, boating and maritime skills in our local Hatteras Island Youth. Below is the schedule for our 2021 Sailing Programs. There will be 4 sessions – Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter. Each session will be 8 weeks long and practices will be on Saturdays with a weekly alternate day on Wednesdays for those who can not make it on Saturdays. We do not want to exclude anyone! So we will keep registration unlimited and divide up the classes based on how many kids register this year for each Session.

Schedule Dates

  • February 10, 2021 – Online Registration is available for Spring 2021.
  • March 6, 2021 – Membership Meeting and Election of Board of Directors
  • April 10 though June 5 – Spring Session (8 week duration) – Register open until April 1.
  • June 12 through August 7 – Summer Session (8 week duration)
  • August 14 through October 2 – Fall Session (8 week duration)
  • October 9 through December 4 – Winter Session (8 week duration)
  • December 11 – Awards Banquet/Party!

We completely understand and acknowledge that there are competing activities and time commitments for both the kids and parents. This is why we have posted the entire 2021 Season Schedule. This way, if unable to participate in our Spring Session, you can plan ahead to participate in one of the following Sessions!

General Session Information

Until all registrations are in, the detailed organization of things is left open on purpose. In general we will be dividing things up by age, skill level, and interest level. In addition, this year we will create a competitive sailing team that will participate in regional events and competitions. This will likely include our nearest club, Colington Yacht Club in Kill Devil Hills, New Bern, Hampton, Norfolk, Beaufort, Manteo and Edenton… if they are allowed under COVID restrictions to organize events. Parents should indicate if their children are interested in competitive sailing and away events.

Otherwise, common sense has shown us that there are new sailors/beginners; youth interested only in fun sailing activities with no competition; and then those interested in competitions. The Varsity Team will meet for practice 2 – 3 times per week, whereas the other categories will only meet once per week.

Older Youth ages 12 – 18

There are also older kids who do not fit well in the smaller Optimist. For this we need to provide larger boats! We need your help raising money for this or buying boats. We have 2 boats in my yard needing repair and preparation for the season and there are several other Hobie 18’s for sale as well as Flying Juniors and 420’s. I will keep a post going on the website and facebook page alerting everyone of good used boat deals that come up. Please consider buying a good used or new boat for our kids to share in the program! Acceptable boats for one design sailing right now are Optimists, 420’s, Flying Juniors, Lasers, and Hobie 18’s. Please contact me if you are able to contribute to boat purchases or are interested in buying your own boat. It is vital for the older kids to have larger boats for safety and comfort.

Session Fees and Membership Fees

It is not required for you to be a member of Hatteras Community Sailing for you to participate in the programs. It is however likely to save you money if you do become a yearly member. For Hatteras Island Residents, membership is $100 per family per year. Session Registrations are $35 per child for members and $70 per child for non members. Please consider joining and becoming a member! This allows you unlimited use of the boats and discounts on sailing related products and services provided by Organization Members and Affiliates. It also allows you to vote as a member on organizational officers, budgets, and other consensus issues not handled by the Board of Directors. To be considered for the Board of Directors or any leadership role, or volunteer role, membership is required.
