2022 Summer Orientation Information

Fun in the sound during camp

Letter from our leadership and coaches

As we kick off the 2022 summer, I want to review some things to set us all up for success. The first thing is what you can do as a parent to support your kid. Show up and be on time. I know it’s easier said than done; however, we have limited time and much to accomplish. Each week we will be building upon what we did the previous week. If you miss a week, your child will have missed vital information for their success. If you miss a week, please try to set up a private lesson so that the following week your kid does not feel out of the loop. This next one is going to be the hardest for you. Parents are not going to be allowed to stay at practice. Once you have dropped your kid off, please leave. Kids need room to grow, thrive and learn. This is hard to do when mom and dad are there to save them if they get scared. I promise you will get a chance to see all they have learned at the end of the six weeks.

Our official form of communication will be through team text and the website. If you need to get ahold of us, please respond to the team text. If you want to volunteer with us, please let us know. We are always in need of people to help! Our goal this summer is to get the kids sailing and having fun. We are here for the kids, so if there is anything you think we need to know for your child’s success, please tell us. We cant wait to spend time with your kids these next few weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I set my kid up for successful sailing experience?

  • there is limited time and much to accomplish
  • show up and be on time
  • each week builds on the previous week’s learning
  • it will be difficult for your child if you miss a lesson

How do I make up a lesson?

You can make up a lesson with a private coaching session. The cost for private coaching is $120 per 2 hour session. Click here to schedule private coaching.

What if I am going to be absent?

Please text 252-999-9659 24 hrs prior to practice so that the coaches can react and plan accordingly.

How can I communicate with Hatteras Sailing?

The team text is our official channel of communication. Any questions, requests, feedback, or complaints should be sent directly via text message to 252-999-9659. Any text message sent to this number is visible only to Coaches, Program Director, and Chairman of the Board. You can direct message, reply, or call that number to reach Hatteras Sailing.

How can I complain, give feedback, or express a concern about something?

Feedback is very much appreciated. However, please do not provide feedback to the coaches during, before, or after practice. This can be distracting and delay coaching for all the sailors. Please send feedback via the team text number, 252-999-9659.

It is our goal to build a world-class sailing program, and we are all working very hard –> it takes untold house from our volunteers, administrators, coaches, and board members. Phone calls are difficult because we are often on the water. If you need a call back, please request a phone call in a text and someone will get back with you via phone call.

What gear do I need to buy and bring for my sailor?

Sunglasses: polarized. Don’t buy expensive ones. They will likely get broken or lost.

Lifejackets: It is NOT mandatory to have your own but most kids like having their own. If you have your own, please take it with you every practice. It will get used if you leave it.

Shoes: Draining/quick dry tennis shoes such as converse, keens, or chacos work well. Sailing booties or wetsuit booties are ideal.

Snack: Sailing and swimming makes kids hungry. Please pack a small snack for your sailor.

Water Bottle: HCS provides a cooler of ice water for filling up water bottles at the beginning of each day of sailing. Sailors are responsible for bringing a refillable water bottle with a strap that can be strapped into the boat during sailing.

How do I answer questions from other parents in the community?

  • Sailing is very weather dependent, athletically challenging, and not every kid will fall in love with sailing
  • Volunteers, administrators, coaches, and board members all work very hard to make this happen for our community
  • HCS is a not for profit community sailing program. Much of the work is done by volunteers. Jr. Coaches and Certified Sailing Coaches are paid for coaching.
  • How they can get involved – call or text Hatteras Sailing at 252-999-9659 – read the website.

Volunteering & Donations

Hatteras Sailing is a volunteer run and sponsor supported not for profit organization. We rely on sponsors and volunteers to keep the program going and keep registration fees and sailing costs affordable for our local community members. For a benchmark, 2022 Opti Level 2 two week program at Hampton is $790 tuition and your sailor must own a boat. Help us keep the program sustainable by helping out!

On our website, we have pages with volunteer requests and donation requests. If you want to help out, these lists are kept up to date with specific needs that the club has – from yard work to scholarships – please help you if you can.
