Design, Build, and Race Your Own Boat

Enter the most fun – most heated activity of the festival every year! Enter to have your team’s name added to The 2024 Wind n Waves Boat Builder’s Cup! Each year, Phillips Boatworks sponsors The Boat Builders Challenge to inspire the next generation of innovators to combine their talent and brainpower to build interesting boats. This challenge works like the America’s Cup – the winner writes the rules for the next challenge. In Spring ’23 at the Wind ‘n Waves Regatta, Noah Phillips won with a foam surfboard design.

You can start anytime using your own materials. Kit materials can be picked as early as 6:00pm at the Bonfire Check-In on June 7th The Boatbuilders Challenge is to build your own boat according the competition rules and compete again other registrants to race your boat as well as other awards for creativity, innovation, presentation and execution!

The Event is part of the 2024 Wind n Waves Sailing Festival and is intended to be a fun event for the entire community of the Outer Banks.  There is no age limit or team size limit. You do not need to be a regular Hatteras Sailor or know how to sail. You can be here visiting just for the festival weekend. Build your best boat. You are not limited to the materials supplied in the kit.

Awards

  • 1st Prize: $100 cash prize & cup go to the team that wins the race
  • 2nd Prize: Best Engineering
  • 3rd Prize: Best Style

Rules

  • open to the public
  • no age limit
  • protests are allowed and encouraged
  • paddles will be provided
  • sails are allowed but not required
  • no fossil fuels or ready made motors
  • competitors may build a man powered, wind powered, or solar powered propulsion
  • ready made components may be approved by the Race Committee at any time in the build cycle
  • no surfboards or paddleboard designs; must be a boat with port and starboard sidewalls of no less than 5″
  • no pre-built boats
  • sails may be used if they are made by the competitor; Phillips Boatworks sail loft is available and has sail cloth for the challenge
  • no ready-made spars; if you design and sew the sail it is legal. Dacron sail cloth available.
  • lines, blocks, rigging are allowed to be used ready made
  • kids and parents can work together on the boat
  • multiple persons can be on the team, but only one person from each team is required to race your boat
