Opti Kids: Learn to Sail
3 days 2 hrs each day
Opti Instruction for younger kiddos (5-8) is challenging. For some sailors, this is too young to learn to sail. Our sailing coaches pace the instruction to the maturity of each child at this age. Generally, 8 years old is the earliest age to learn sailing. Passing a swim test is required. Capsizing / recovery is required. We staff our Opti Kids learn to sail with One coach and two jr. coaches.
The sailing instructor introduces theory as an experienced Opti Jr Coach demonstrates practical skills. We progress practical skills by double handing the Opti. We teach in shallow water and light wind so that the instructors can push/catch the boat and there is no need to use a powerboat for chase.
Our goals are safety and fun. We consider the coaching a success if the young sailor leaves this experience with the impression that sailing is fun….and not too scary…and a desire to learn more about sailing and sail again soon.
Day 1:
- Theory: wind indicators and intro to sailboat controls
- Practical: double handed introduction to opti sailing
Day 2:
- Theory: sailboat controls and intro to points of sail
- Practical: steering opti with no sails; double handed intro to tiller
Day 3:
- Theory: points of sail
- Practical: double handed with sail learning one control at a time then putting it all together double handed and if the sailor is ready putting it all together single handed
